Archeological Sites

The island has a documented history reaching back 3000 years. There is also evidence of Paleolithic people in Sri Lanka from about 300,000 years ago. But the kingdoms that sprouted in the 4th Century BC with the founding of the kingdom of Anuradhapura is where most of the historical evidence starts. And such archeological sites that also include places like Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya can be both beautiful and mind boggling in their design, detail and technology. If you are a fan of archeology there is lots to be seen, to learn and understand.

Archeology Study Tours

The archeological findings of Sri Lanka dot the entire island. These can be from the past kingdoms, to earliest known settlements, Bronze Age to Iron Age and the site of the famous Balangoda man. We are happy to understand your specific interests in archeology and put together a study tour that help you uncover all the amazing facts.

Mind, Body & Soul

This is an island for the senses and the spirit. A truly immersive experience of Sri Lanka promises not just sensory pleasures but also healing and awakening. With rich traditions in indigenous medicine, Buddhist philosophy, customs and traditions running back thousands of years, Sri Lanka is a place to also speak your mind and your soul.

Indigenous Treatments

Although you will see numerous medicine practises termed ‘Ayurveda’ on your Sri Lankan holiday, it is important to note that the local indigenous medicine practises were developed separately and are not the same as Indian Ayurveda, despite the word being used freely. The indigenous medicine of Sri Lanka is the ‘Hela Wedakama’ and the differences may not be easy to spot for the untrained eye.

Hela Vedakama is mostly handed down from generation to generation and that has made it extremely difficult to preserve. It’s origins date back to ancient Sri Lanka more than 8000 years ago, and still being practiced by different families of healers for many specialties.

Yoga

Travellers globally have developed a health and wellness focus and justifiably so. As a result these practises are made available in different parts of Sri Lanka. A great yoga practice is therefore not hard to find. From Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga to Kundalini, the island has a rich pool of both great local and international yoga teachers, programmes and experiences in beautiful serene settings.

Traditional martial arts

Angampora is the traditional martial art form of Sri Lanka. It is a combination of techniques that include self-defence, sport exercise and meditation. The form is heavy on hand to hand combat and occasionally uses indigenous weaponry. Angampora fell into disuse as colonial powers took hold, but has returned as more locals work to preserve it and share its techniques.

Buddhist Mindfulness Meditation

Non-judgmental awareness sits at the core of mindful meditation – a practice widely practised in Sri Lanka given the influence of Buddhism in the island. There are short to long programmes available at privately run institutions as well as Buddhist monasteries. Some even combine meditation with various other health and wellness practises. Finding the right programme for you needs to be done with a consultation as the wrong programme might be uncomfortable or you may not receive the benefits you were hoping for.
